What is Daughters of Deborah Mentoring Ministry?
The Daughters of Deborah ministry is a team-based mentoring program that pairs a team of mentors with a group of preteen or teen girls for a full school year. Daughters of Deborah offers girls an enjoyable time with caring adult role models and focuses on life-skill building and spiritual development.
The program is organized into five groups, and each group meets for mentoring sessions twice a month, from mid September through early June. The mentoring groups, which are based on the girls’ grade levels, are as follows:
| • Jewels — 5th grade |
• Virtuous Girls — 6th grade |
| • Gems — 7th and 8th grade |
• Sapphires — 9th and 10th grade |
| • Diamonds — 11th and 12th grade |
|
Each mentoring group has discussion topics, lesson plans, and scheduled activities appropriate for their grade level, which help instill positive Christian values— empowering each girl to reach their full potential.
A Brief Look Into the Life of Deborah
The Daughters of Deborah mentoring ministry is based upon the life of Deborah, in Judges 4:4-5.
Deborah is a personal name meaning “bee.” She was judged in the time of Judges, after Joshua and before the Kings. Deborah was a governing leader, known to be a prophetess, a judge, and the wife of Lapidoth. She is thought to have lived about 1200 B.C. She is described as “a mother in Israel” following her role in delivering God’s people. She was unique in that Samuel was the only other person to fill all of these positions: prophet, judge, and military leader after Moses.
Deborah had the duty of hearing and deciding cases brought to her by the people of Israel. The Scripture says that she sat under the palm tree of Deborah to hear her cases. This court was located between Ramah and Bethel in the southern part of Ephraim.
As a prophet and military leader, Deborah worked with Barak, giving him instructions from the Lord in a battle against the Canaanite army led by Sisera. Deborah’s leadership and authority is shown in the victory poem in Judges 5 and by the fact that Barak sought her presence as he went to battle.
Today a judge is one known to point out the right situation; exercise authority in hearing cases and making decisions; qualified to give an opinion and determine the relative worth in any given situation.
